Michael Cristofer, who wrote the libretto for Champion, also wrote the stage play Man in the Ring, which had its world premiere at Court Theatre in 2016. Griffith’s story has been told before, including in the 2005 documentary Ring of Fire: The Emile Griffith Story. (Blow’s memoir outlined a childhood sexual assault and its psychological impact on him as he came to terms with being a gay Black man.) What both stories have in common is a Black man’s coming of age against a backdrop of violence, exploitation, and guilt, as well as the ways that vengeance and forgiveness weave themselves together like a combination trap and lifeline over a lifetime of pain.
